Diseases of the oral mucosa are combined under a common name - Stomatitises. Stomatitises are common, but their correct diagnosis is difficult. This is due to the fact that different diseases are not diseases of only the oral cavity but of the whole body and can occur with the same manifestations - inflammatory ulcerations of the oral mucosa. A variety of factors may be the cause of it – the factors that impact directly on the mucous membrane of the mouth, as well as diseases of the body - diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, the weakening of the immune protection, allergic reactions, metabolic disorders and many others. Often the cause of Stomatitis is the failure of oral hygiene, heavy dental plaque, damaged teeth, and moreover, violations of the technique of dental procedures - the micro traumas, the use of dissimilar metals in the treatment and applying dentures, influence of chemicals.

Effective treatment of stomatitis in the first place requires a correct diagnosis made by a doctor and after that, depending on the diagnosis, the treatment is chosen for the patient. Often, regardless of the diagnosis, one of the appointments is the recommendation of a specialist to make sanitation of oral cavity with an infusion of herbs.

The “Pharmaceutical Company "Vertex”, Ltd." together with “Experimental Plant “GNCLS” Ltd.” have developed and introduced a preventive preparation based on herbs that can be recommended for sanitation of the oral cavity. This preventive preparation (PP) — "Stomatoklin" — has been developed taking into account the age-long knowledge of folk medicine and phyto-chemistry. Components of Stomatoklin "are blend (mixture) of liquid extracts of rhizomes of Acorus calamus, rhizomes of Bergenia crassifolia, rhizomes with roots of Archangelica officinalis, flowers of Calendula officinalis, rhizomes with roots of Sanguisorba officinalis (burnet), herb of Filipendula ulmaria (Filipendula vulgaris), Rose petals, flowers of Camomile (Matricaria recutita).

Calamus rhizome contains a volatile oil consisting of a mixture of monoterpenoids (camphene, camphor, borneol), sesquiterpenoids (akoron), aromatics (asarone, eugenol), ascorbic acid, tannins, slime, starch, a bitter glucoside. Externally in folk medicine, decoction of the rhizome of calamus is used for rinsing the mouth with bad breath, flushing of septic wounds and ulcers. This application is due to the presence of antimicrobial, local anaesthetic, astringent, enveloping, reparative, and hemostatic effect of the extract of calamus rhizomes.

Badan (Bergenia crassifolia ) is rich in tannins. It has glycosides (arbutin, izokumarin, bergenin), gums, starches, sugars, tannins, volatile, vitamin C, trace elements (manganese, iron, copper). Bergenia rhizome is widely used to treat many diseases, including inflammatory processes in the oral cavity, since it has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, astringent, styptic and reparative actions.

Extract of rhizomes and roots of angelica, which is a part of the PP "Stomatoklin”, causes soothing, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions of this phyto-preparation. These types of actions are related to the chemical composition of rhizomes and roots of angelica - the presence in them of resins, essential oils, waxes, tannins, bitter substances, angelica acid, valeric acid, malic acid and acetic acid, coumarins (angelicin, arhangelicin, ostenol, ksantoksol, etc.).

It is known that calendula flowers which are a part of the PP "Stomatoklin" are a valuable source of carotenoids (up to 3%). Calendula flowers contain 15 carotenoids, including ß-carotene, lycopene, lutein, etc. Also, one of the main classes of active substances causing the pharmacological properties of extracts of calendula are flavonoids. It is the presence of carotenoids and flavonoids that makes it possible to apply extracts of calendula as wound healing, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory preparation which improves tissue regeneration.

Rhizomes and roots of Sanguisorba officinalis (burnet) contain tannins, free gallic acid and ellagic acid, triterpene saponins, essential oil, volatile and vitamin C (up 0.92%). In folk medicine the decoction of rhizomes with roots is used externally as a rinse for treating inflammation of oral cavity and throat. Burnet has astringent, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, analgesic and antibacterial activity against microbes of dysenteric and typhus-paratyphus groups.

Filipendula herb contains tannins, phenolic compounds (quercetin and its glycosides, dihydroquercetin, apigenin, rododendrol, m-hydroxybenzoic, salicylic, anise, gallic, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, ferulic, chlorogenic, caffeic acid and esculetin), essential oil, vitamin C. This chemical composition makes for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of extract of aerial parts of Filipendula.

Rose petals and chamomile flowers are a classic medical raw material used to treat stomatitis in folk and scientific medicine. Their extracts have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and astringent types of actions.

Thus, due to the chemical composition of plants which are a part of the component of PP “Stomatoklin”, this phyto-preparation possesses anti-inflammatory, astringent, antiseptic, styptic kinds of actions to improve the regeneration of damaged oral mucosa. PP "Stomatoklin" can be used as an adjuvant in treatment of inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa (thrush, periodontal disease, ulcerative-necrotizing gingivostomatit) after removal of periodontal scaling and curettage of pathological gingival pockets as well as to prevent complications after tooth extraction and implantation of artificial tooth roots.
